16:30 Doors 17:00 Intro 17:10 Short: Bubbling Baby (2025) 17:30 Lisbon Beat (2019)
This day is International Africa Day and together with Africadelic we present the Dutch premiere of Lisbon Beat (Batida de Lisboa), an energetic documentary showcasing the thriving Afro-Portuguese music scene on the outskirts of Lisbon. The film highlights a diverse group of musicians and producers from Angola, São Tomé, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and features DJ Nigga Fox among many others.
In addition, we will be screening Bubbling Baby again, a new short documentary by Sharine Rijsenburg that explores the origins, evolution and significance of bubbling, the high-energy music and dance genre born from Caribbean-Dutch communities in the 1980s, blending dancehall, reggae, and electronic beats.
With an introduction by Malaika Amaranma Obieful, a multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of BBBwithluv, a collective focused on Black queer liberation, whose work spans various mediums and is grounded in care, community, and radical imagination.
Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
