Join us for the opening of 'SK8GIRLS: Skateboarding as an Act of Resistane' between 17:00 and 21:00.
Skateboard culture is globally associated with freedom, creativity, and bold self-expression, values that have also defined Melkweg for decades. Yet despite its progressive image, the skate world remains largely male-dominated. For female and queer skaters, this often results in limited visibility, restricted access to space, and a persistent sense of exclusion.
This exhibition shows work by Coco Olakunle, Desiré van den Berg, Lanna Apisukh,
Lola & Pani, Joël Linda Manoppo, Chantal Pinzi and Juliet Klottrup and centers the energy, diversity and strength of female and queer skate communities from around the world. Through powerful visuals, stories and artistic expressions, it highlights communities that challenge barriers, create new spaces and rewrite the rules of skate culture on their own terms. Skateboards appear not only as tools of movement, but as symbols of identity, resistance and collective power. SK8GIRLS highlights international skate communities from Ethiopia, India, Morocco, New York and more.
The exhibition combines photography, documentary and a zine, reflecting the DIY culture within the skate world. The zine is produced in collaboration with The Dreamers Magazine, a project by artist Joël Linda Manoppo. In this way, we approach the subject from an artistic perspective in which skate culture, feminism, and community come together. By combining visual storytelling, interviews and creative works, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on gender inclusion, equality, and power dynamics.
